World Environment Day takes place on June 5 every year, and the next one is on Saturday, June 5, 2027. Led by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), it is the United Nations’ flagship day for environmental action and one of the largest global platforms for public outreach on the environment.
Born at the first UN environment summit
The day traces back to the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm in June 1972, the first major UN conference to treat the environment as a global issue. Later that year the UN General Assembly designated June 5, the opening day of the Stockholm conference, as World Environment Day. The same period saw the creation of UNEP itself.
The first World Environment Day was celebrated in 1973 under the slogan “Only One Earth.” Since then it has grown into a global event observed by governments, businesses, civil society groups and millions of individuals.
A new host and theme every year
The date never changes, but each edition has a different host country and a theme chosen by UNEP. Themes have covered issues such as plastic pollution, air quality, biodiversity, land restoration and ecosystem protection. The host country stages the main official events, while communities elsewhere organize their own activities around the same focus. Because themes are announced in advance, it is worth checking UNEP’s official campaign page before planning.
How to get involved
As an individual
- Choose one habit to change for good, such as carrying a reusable bottle and bag or cutting food waste.
- Join or organize a local cleanup in a park, beach or riverbank.
- Plant native species that support local insects and birds.
- Learn which items your local recycling program actually accepts.
For schools
- Hold an outdoor lesson and record the plants and animals found on school grounds.
- Build a simple compost bin for cafeteria scraps.
- Let students present solutions to the year’s theme in a mini science fair.
For workplaces
Review energy use and waste in the office, switch to reusable kitchenware, encourage bike-to-work days, or partner with a local environmental group for a volunteer day. Sharing what you have learned with customers or suppliers can multiply the impact.
Is World Environment Day a holiday?
No. It is a UN observance, not a public holiday, so offices and schools stay open. Because June 5 falls near the end of the US school year, many teachers fold it into end-of-term projects.
Track the date
There are 220 days to go. Embed this countdown on a school or community website, or share the link with volunteers so everyone knows when the cleanup starts. Other green dates nearby include World Oceans Day on June 8 and Earth Day on April 22.
