World Smile Day falls on the first Friday of October every year, and its message fits in one line: do an act of kindness, help one person smile. The next World Smile Day is Friday, October 1, 2027. The countdown above shows the time left down to the second, so you can line up a surprise for a friend, a classmate or a coworker.
How the date is set
Unlike many awareness days, World Smile Day does not have a fixed calendar date. It is always the first Friday in October, which means it can land anywhere from October 1 to October 7. Because it is a Friday, it is easy to tie into the end of the school or work week: a treat in the break room, a dress-down day or a kindness challenge that runs through the weekend.
From a $45 logo to a worldwide day
The day was created by Harvey Ball, the commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts, who drew the famous yellow smiley face. In 1963 the State Mutual Life Assurance Company hired him to design a morale-boosting image for its employees. He reportedly finished it in about ten minutes and was paid $45. Ball never trademarked the design, and over the following decades it appeared on countless buttons, mugs and T-shirts around the world.
Ball worried that the smiley had become a commercial product with little meaning behind it. In 1999 he launched the first World Smile Day to bring the focus back to genuine goodwill. After his death in 2001, the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation was set up in his honor and continues to promote the day while supporting small, grassroots charitable efforts.
Ideas to make someone smile
- Bring coffee or donuts for the people who start work earliest.
- Send a voice message instead of a text to someone you have not talked to in a while.
- Hide sticky notes with encouraging messages in a family member’s bag or lunchbox.
- Pay for the order of the person behind you in a drive-through line.
- Draw your own smiley in Harvey Ball’s style; kids love a ten-minute design challenge.
- Print an old funny photo and mail it to the people in it.
For teachers and team leads
World Smile Day lands early in the school year, when classes are still getting to know each other. A simple activity is a “smile hunt,” where each student has to make three different people smile before lunch and report back how they did it. Teams at work can run a quick shout-out round on Friday morning. If you want everyone to see the day approaching, share this countdown link in the group chat or display it in full-screen mode on a classroom board.
