National Doctors’ Day in the United States is celebrated every year on March 30, and the next one falls on Tuesday, March 30, 2027. The countdown above gives hospitals, clinics, patients and families time to plan a meaningful thank-you for the physicians who care for them.
The surgery that set the date
The date honors a milestone in medicine. On March 30, 1842, Dr. Crawford W. Long of Jefferson, Georgia, used sulfuric ether to put a patient, James Venable, to sleep before removing a tumor from his neck. It is recognized as the first use of ether as a surgical anesthetic, and it opened the door to surgery without pain.
Nearly a century later, the anniversary inspired a celebration. On March 30, 1933, Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, organized the first Doctors’ Day in Winder, Georgia. Cards were mailed to physicians and their spouses, and flowers were placed on the graves of deceased doctors, including Dr. Long’s.
From local custom to national observance
The idea spread through medical societies and their alliances over the following decades. Congress eventually passed a joint resolution, and on October 30, 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed it into law, designating March 30 as National Doctors’ Day. The red carnation is the day’s traditional symbol.
National Doctors’ Day is not a federal holiday, so hospitals, clinics and offices operate as usual. Other countries choose their own dates; India, for example, observes National Doctors’ Day on July 1.
Ways to thank your doctor
- Send a handwritten card that mentions how their care made a difference.
- Leave a thoughtful review or a note of thanks with the clinic staff.
- Bring a red carnation or a small tray of snacks for the whole team.
- Donate to a medical charity or a hospital foundation in your physician’s name.
- Share a public thank-you on the practice’s social media page.
Ideas for hospitals and practices
- Host a staff breakfast or lunch, including night-shift and on-call physicians.
- Hand out red carnations or lapel pins at the start of each shift.
- Collect patient thank-you notes and display them in break rooms.
- Feature a few doctors in a newsletter or on internal screens.
Related healthcare observances
Doctors’ Day is part of a wider season of appreciation. National Nurses Week runs from May 6 to May 12, ending on Florence Nightingale’s birthday, and many hospitals also celebrate Hospital Week in May. If your team is planning several events, you can create your own countdown for each one and share the links with staff. On the day itself, try putting this page in full-screen mode on a lobby or break-room screen.
