National Dog Day falls on August 26 every year, and you will also see it called International Dog Day because dog lovers far beyond the US have adopted the same date. The next one is Thursday, August 26, 2027. The countdown above shows exactly how many days, hours and minutes remain until the biggest tail-wagging day of late summer.
A date with a personal story
The day was founded in 2004 by Colleen Paige, an animal welfare advocate, pet lifestyle expert and author. She chose August 26 because it was the date her family adopted their first dog from an animal shelter when she was 10 years old. That origin explains the day’s main message: celebrate all dogs, mixed breed and purebred alike, and encourage people to adopt dogs in need of homes.
The day also honors the work dogs do for people, from guide and service dogs to search-and-rescue teams, police and detection dogs, and therapy dogs that visit hospitals and schools. Paige has since started several other pet observances, including National Puppy Day and National Cat Day.
National or International Dog Day?
Both names point to the same date. The US-born “National Dog Day” is the more common search term in America, while “International Dog Day” is widely used in the UK, India and elsewhere. Unlike some animal days, there is no competing date to keep track of, so August 26 works wherever you are.
Ideas for celebrating with your dog
- Try a new trail or park: new smells are a treat in themselves; check whether dogs are allowed and whether leashes are required.
- Watch the heat: late August can be hot, so walk early or late and test the pavement with your hand; if it is too hot to hold for a few seconds, it is too hot for paws.
- Teach a new trick: five-minute training sessions with small treats are a great way to bond.
- Bake dog-safe treats: simple recipes with oats, plain pumpkin and xylitol-free peanut butter are easy to make.
- Book a checkup or grooming: use the day as a yearly reminder for vaccinations, dental care and nail trims.
- Update the ID tag and microchip: make sure your phone number is current.
Help dogs without one at home
- Ask your local shelter for its wish list and drop off supplies.
- Sign up to walk dogs or help at an adoption event.
- Foster a dog for a few weeks to free up shelter space.
- Share adoptable dogs from local rescues on your social media.
If you are thinking about adopting, take your time. Consider your schedule, your space and the energy level of the dog, and ask the shelter staff which dogs would suit your home. A good match matters more than a quick decision on a special day.
